Comments: | The SHP-77 (Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA) cell line is a biochemically stable continuously cultured cell line which has retained important features of SCLC. This cell line is an unusual undifferentiated large cell variant of small cell lung carcinoma. It has the morphology of a variant, but the biochemical properties of a classic SCLC.Electron microscopy revealed the presence of gland formation and intracytoplasmic lamellar bodies.The cells have neuroendocrine markers L-dopa decarboxylase and dense core secretory granules. SHP-77 can serve as an in vitro target in 51Cr and 111In release cytotoxicity assays as well as in vivo nude mice assays for evaluating immune reactivity of cells and serum from lung cancer patients.The cells can be used to evaluate the immune status of patients with SCLC who are treated with radiation or chemotherapy.
